Thursday, July 17th, 2008 - Keep On Roko In The Free World

So who delivers the annual American League fire and brimstone, profanity laced speech to get the players amped up to win the All-Star Game? Ichiro. No kidding. He's been doing it since 2001 and the AL has never lost when he's dropped his diatribe...the Yankees are out on the AJ Burnett bidding, but they once said that about Bobby Abreu a couple years back before getting him on the cheap...Donald Trump told Max Kellerman that he's pretty sure that A-Rod has a pre-nup. Slick defence, A-Rod...tomorrow morning on The Score, Canada faces Croatia in an Olympic qualifier. For Raptors fans, it is a chance to see new back-up Point Guard, and soon to be starter when Jose Calderon proves he can't endure the NBA grind for the third year running, Roko Ukic, who was signed yesterday to a three year deal. Game time is 6AM...there's a giant three way NHL trade in the works that would see LA get Martin Gerber and Andrej Meszaros, Chicago get Anze Kopitar, and Ottawa get Nikolai Khabibulin. Those are just the main players in the deal. Chicago is getting good fast...the NFL is employing people to ensure there are no gang signs flashed in on-field celebrations. Good thing they're not being overly anal...Bill Parcells had a problem with Jason Taylor going on Dancing With The Stars, laying his hands on the smoking hot Edyta Sliwinska. Wonder how he feels with QB hopeful Josh McCown getting his hands carved as a result of a "miscommunication" while working a chainsaw with his brother? Kudos to RM reader TS for that head's up...wonder how Canadian NBAers will feel about playing for Canada now that Samuel Dalembert was deemed expendable by that hack TV commentator Leo Rautins moonlighting as a coach?...the British Open is off today. Have a sneaking suspicion that Sergio Garcia continues the great month for Spain and wins it...it has been a long time since I thought the world needed help, so today, "make the world a better place, punch Brett Favre in the face." There, I feel better. Now somebody get that done...Maxim's Hot 100 list just saw #42 - Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly - conquered by Derek Jeter, netting him 7 ladies off the list. Jeter was seen having a good time at a party he hosted during the break...thankfully, the All-Star Break is over and we're back to daily baseball action...finally, Toronto Maple Leafs tickets for their true value: nothing. The Leafs are giving away tickets to a pre-season game. Free. All of them...Steven Paige of the Barenaked Ladies, busted for possession of the Devil's Dandruff? Nicely done...have a great Thursday.

solid teams chasing solid players. ottawa wants habibulin, tampa signed lecavalier etc. meantime oilers sign zack stortini aka "cant fight, cant skate, cant score, cant pass" and shaun horcoff. horcoff got 33 mil for 6 years, it is 5.5 per season. that is what i call insanity. he makes only 2 mil less then crosby.
p.s. happy missed playoffs again edmonton.

btw , TBEK , it was Josh McCown that injured himself with a chainsaw. Former Chicago Bears first round bust Cade McNown , who you have confused him with , would probably kill for a job cutting lumber at this point of his life.

A-Rod hosted a party with Madonna on the guest list and a whole bunch of others, problem is...no one showed and A-rod and his buddies poured down shots the whole night in a corner.

Yea, I've heard the pre-nup thing as well...one smart dude.

Does anyone named "Phil Anshutz", "Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment", "Red Bull", or "Lamar Hunt" - just to name a few - own a CFL team? Not even close. These guys are BILLIONAIRES plus and are invested fully and building new stadia for the MLS. When was the last CFL stadium built, never?

One is rising, the other is just worried about survival, particularly when Uncle NFL rolls into Toronto.

apparently Uncle NFL can't even make it in good ol' your town.

Larry Rickman , Horn Chen , Murray Pezim , the fabulous Glieberman's ... the CFL too has had their share of flaky rich dudes investing into a financial blackhole , don't think your MLS is so special.

I must say one other thing does remind me of the CFL when I think MLS. The one game I did see 5 minutes of was the Toronto at Houston game. The crowd seemed reminiscent of a Shreveport Pirates crowd ....

I'm with you on this Leo Rautins is a complete hack. He was only hired as they thought his charm would woo Nash. Not only has he failed in that department, he's driven Dalembert away...

And where is Juan Mendez?

Anonymous said...

Juan Mendez went the same way as Dalembert, only a week earlier.

Leo Rautins.

Fails as a color commentator.

Fails as Canada's National Team Coach, Period. This team has been driving away great players and now, when you have a NBA player who WANTS to play for this team. You kick him right off. No class at all from Mr.Rautins. Roll Call for the next coach?

what the mls has that the cfl doesn't is options. they can expand.

cfl, well, they're gonna be stuck on eight or nine (maybe seven) teams forever. any league with that few teams for that long, and with no prospects of growth ... it's hard to not laugh at it.

tomorrow's line:
Croatia -12 vs. Canada

ML:
Croatia -730
Canada +660

Over/under: 158.5

wow GBVH ,

you mean there's an unlimited supply of markets in Canada and the US that MLS can set up shop and draw flies?

Impressive. Count me in as a fan.

Anonymous said...

"options" equals "potential."
that's something the cfl doesn't have.
especially after that jaunt into the u.s.

Anonymous said...

the CFL has origins dating back to the 1860's. Officially founded in 1958. So there "expansion" opportunities are limited? Big deal. They have survived 95% of these years with 7 - 10 teams.

your MLS will not last a fraction of what our league has.

Second class football is one thing. At least people enjoy and appreciate football in North America. Trying to sell second class soccer (fuck , first class for that matter) in North America is like trying to sell a salad to Big Daddy. Ain't happening.

Anonymous said...

that's precisely why the league is so funny ... cuz there are seven to 10 teams. forever.

Anonymous said...

your team plays a whopping 10 home games. surely a 30,000 attendance average in that mammoth stadium is nothing to brag about. it's only 10 games after all.
maybe folk out there are brighter than i'm giving them credit for.

reviving a convo I had with TB before, Nat. Basketball needs a good coach. They have not had once since???? Never.
Mccown (not to be confused with the chainsaw brothers) talked about it today. Hire a big name from outside of Canada or a puppet that everyone that is good will play for.

Still don't get why they let Triano go. On McCown's show yesterday a caller had a good idea. Butch Carter. I believe he lives up here still.

And lovin' the CFL-MLS saga guys.

:)

I think the CFL is retarded but starting to think MLS is not far behind.

Seriously you bring in a team like West Ham to play in the ASG and that's fine. But you also schedule them for an exhibition with Columbus a few days prior..like WTF

Anonymous said...

Btw, B. Carter no thanks...he was a nut..I remember when he tried to sue Camby for 5 mill after Camby called him a liar.

I take offense, sir, when you say that Jose Calderon will show that he can't handle the grind of the NBA season for the third straight year. You KNOW that that is a factually incorrect statement, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

It will be his FOURTH straight year, not his third. Get it right.
