Thursday, June 5th - Red Knocks 'Em Dead...Again

The Detroit Red Wings sealed the deal and picked up their fourth Stanley Cup in 11 seasons, and first led by a European Captain, alongside a Euro Conn Smythe winner. Take THAT, Don Cherry. Pittsburgh may have been beat, but you can be sure they'll be back. And hey, who was that Malkin guy with a couple points? Ain't seen him all series - he looks like he might be good!...I've never liked Inter Milan, preferring AC Milan as far as Serie Z is concerned, and them hiring the kill-the-game Jose Morinho only makes me hate them more...okay, so I've cracked on the Pens and Inter Milan, I'm one Pittsburgh Steelers or Liverpool crack from a certain Pittsburgh reader here getting real sour with me...somebody alert Andrew Dice Clay. Ford has a vehicle named the "Fairlane"...Flip Saunders had a mere 176-70 record, and two conference final losses, on his resume with the Detroit Pistons. That is what having championship aspirations brings: a firing if you're not good enough to go over the top...New England Patriot Nick Kaczur was involved in a drug sting where he was purchasing 100 OxyContin pills for $3,900? Man, I've really gotta hit the streets with the 80 I've got...the Boston Celtics are 8-2 head to head with the LA Lakers in NBA Championships. I've got the Lakers to make it 8-3 in the final, which starts tonight...I may have to write it twice to believe it: Mike Mussina, 9-4 on June 5th...have a great Thursday.

way, way too much is made of that euro captain thing.
a captain is a captain and hockey is hockey. a big team sport. one where the best players will play only half the game -- tops.
it ain't like basketball where one player can make a night-and-day difference.

Unfortunately, thanks to idiots like Don Cherry (I cannot describe in words how much I hate that guy) and the mental midgets that are Leafs fans, that myth gets perpetuated. "Sundin will never Captain the team to a Cup". Memo to Leafs fans: that's because the teams he's had are garbage! Did Gilmour or Clark take them to the promised land? Hell no. Are either of them Hall of Fame bound? Nope. 13 is.

I'm amazed that people put so much emphasis on the captain at all, as if these guys need a "rah rah" type. The best lead by example, not by what the simpletons think is scruff of the neck, fire and brimstone, chair smashing speeches in the locker room. Don't believe that? Then you must think Lidstrom is the old school style captain or that Joe Sakic is. They're not.

Add it to the "black quarterback" and "black head coach" in the NFL as another thing that simply came down to opportunity meeting the right team.

Know how momma always would say " Boy I brought you into this world...I could take you out"...well that's what Flury did last night.

Had a nasty 0-fer night on the gaming front...fuckin moose.

Sorry as good as the Lakers..I mean Kobe Bryant is...I can just see the Big 3 playing out of this world as they try to grab their first and this is as close as it gets.

Fantastic rant, tb. I'd also add that Yzerman hardly fits into the chair-smashing style of leadership, himself, and I think he ended up doing okay there in Detoilet...but I guess we're supposed to believe his style of leadership is supposed to be superior based on his country of birth?

I don't see Boston beating L.A. You can say anything you want about Kobe, but I think the Lakers have the execution. Execution wins championships, and they run the Triple Post as well as any team of Phil Jackson's since the second-last Bulls championship team. They pass as well in the interior as any other team I've ever seen, so I have to think they have a huge advantage going into this series.

That said, I won't be shocked if Boston wins, or even upset: but I think favouring the Lakers is the right call.

Jeesh...the hits just keep coming :)

Congrats to the Wings...the better team (this time around)...much deserved series win. As far as Lidstrom...class act, I'm a big fan...happy for him. Can't say the same for Holmstrom or Franzen, both who appear to go down when the wind blows. Throw Ozzie in that group as well.

I don't get the Mourinho hire. Do I really want Didier Drogba's finger waving act on my squad? If there's a bright side...I hope it means the end of Ibra's tenure. Great finisher, but his laziness wears on me. I'd rather have my guy Crespo, but he'll be gone I imagine.

at least I've got Euro 08 to look fwd to.

i just saw goltv out of the corner of my eye and they said mourinho is looking to sell five internationals from the team.
pretty sure ibrahimovic wasn't one of them but not positive.
i think remember hearing adriano and stankovic.
there was at least one argentine in there too.

Back from catching a fucload of fish in beautiful Moose Lake , Alberta. Best fishing trip ever ....

Fuck , Don Cherry's schtick was already tiresome in the early 90's. Why doesn't that clown just go away?

I have the Celtic's in 7.

Off to watch Eskimo's practice this afternoon ...

Bukakke - watch out for Noel Prefontaine, he's seriously bent over the trade from what I hear. Imagine if they traded him to Saskabush?

B. Kennedy - that comment on execution gives me greater confidence than even before, you being the x's and o's pro. Methinks a little sprinkle at Pinnacle is in order!

Gary - funny you mention the finger waving. I've got a few guys I play with that WORSHIP Chelsea, and one even has his hair long, the hair band and wears #11. He did the finger wave in our first game. No joke.

YF - you can't bet against the "Y" or you're no "F".

Was more against Moose and I'm taking the approach that you did with the Raps...as long as Farnsworth and LaTroy are with the Y I ain't watching.....though I must admit...today was a think of beauty.

One thing I forgot to mention about the Lakers: they have Pau-t Gasol, and apparently he's a Spanish nancy boy and allows himself to get pushed around all over the court by more aggressive players.

Just watched his play last night and reminded myself, "Yeah, he can pass and is skilled - but he's still a Spaniard, and the Celtics might be preparing to chow down on Spicolina's for lunch."
