Now that he's retired, Brett Favre and his true love - no, not Jenn Sterger - finally got around to getting married like they've long planned yesterday. Good luck, you crazy kids.
Seems the New York Jets defence isn't taking well to coach Rex Ryan saying they weren't good enough on Sunday in their 10-6 loss to Miami. Says defensive end Shaun Ellis: "I guess we needed a shutout." Think there's a divide in that team between the offence and defence? I'd bet that. Hard. Former Miami Dolphin (among others) Zach Thomas looks at the tripping incident Sunday in the Jets/Dolphins game and provides pretty compelling evidence that the Jets lined up people to get in the way intentionally with Sal Alosi tripping a Dolphin, as we all now know. Dirty.
Very classy of UEFA boss Michel Platini and FIFA boss Sepp Blatter to pile on the losing bids for the World Cups in 2018 and 2022. Platini calls the Qatar win for 2022 "something beautiful" while BlatterEngland "bad losers" called for their complaints in the aftermath of the 2018 vote in which Blatter declared England the best technical bid that ended up receiving all of two votes, most likely given Blatter's huge influence over the lesser lights that comprise most of the voting committee. Franz Beckenbauer, as respected a man as there is in the game, hammered FIFA for the leaking of vote totals, which were to be secret, and said he's lost confidence in the organization of which he is a part. Oh, it gets better: there's now word that Qatar paid $10 million for each FIFA vote.
Wallace Matthews at ESPN.com says Derek Jeter's anger at the press conference announcing his new contract is misplaced, and he should be ecstatic to get the contract he received. Matthews also says if Jeter was sour over the negotiations, wait until he hears from GM Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi that he isn't fit to lead off or play short stop every day.
Manchester City's Carlos Tevez sure changed his mind about being on the right side of Manchester after leaving United in the summer of 2009. Nevermind that he was scoring with great regularity, that the team is improving greatly and a threat to win titles, or that he is the highest paid player on the team, or that he's the team's captain, he wants out in the January transfer window because, in the end, it really is all about Carlos Tevez. Shame really, he's a fantastic player who works hard, but clearly is a bit of a headcase.
Remember the giant controversy over the Dallas Cowboys scoreboard being too low and punts hitting it? Well, it hasn't happened in a regular season game yet.
Las Vegas over/under on New York Knicks wins this season was set at 35.5. They'd reach 36 by going only 20-37 rest of way
Jose Canseco is going off the deep end any moment now, if he hasn't already. Check out his tweet at the right.
NBC Sports looks at the Cliff Lee signing by the Philadelphia Phillies and says it is too early to pencil them into the World Series.
Cliff Lee is the first major free agent the New York Yankees targeted in 20 years (Greg Maddux being the last) that the Yankees missed out on. Pretty decent track record, and pretty decent record over the last twenty years. So far, the Yankees Plan B includes Canadian catcher Russell Martin - nice - and Mark Prior, a big reach albeit with no risk on a minor league deal.
The first time Toronto Raptor Jose Caleron missed a game due to soreness, I was impressed because nobody had ever to my knowledge missed a game before for that reason. History is always impressive, no? After that, I started to question his toughness. The times after that - I've lost count - I started to think maybe I was being too harsh. Who could expect a guy with a contract pushing eight figures a year to show up for work and play through a boo-boo? And now that he's missed another road trip, well, I'll say it: he's a pussy.

Rogers to buy Leafs/Raptors/TFC/Marlies?
Rogers Communications is in talks to drop $1.3 billion to buy the Ontario Teacher's Pension Fund'sMaple Leaf Sports and Entertainment share in . The move would make Rogers the largest shareholder in MLSE, and give them control of the Maple Leafs, Raptors, Toronto FC and the Marlies, the Air Canada Centre, Ricoh and BMO Field, in addition to their ownership of the Blue Jays and their building. That'd be some powerhouse of an ownership group, but if I'm a Jays fan, can't imagine I'm thrilled to be in bed with the Leafs, who dominate all things Toronto. Glad to see my monthly contributions to Rogers by my cell, cable, internet and home phone bills aren't at all profitable. At least they get those right, their sporting record is poor, at best, if you consider their Jays run and how well their "Bills in Toronto" investment has gone. Buried in all that talk is word that MLSE President Richard Peddie will be packing it in on December 31st. Unfortunately, 2011 and not 2010. He's a shoe-in to be Gary Bettman's speech writer, given how well he does smug through repeated failure.
A thief, and the suspicion is it is somebody that knew the family and certainly the circumstances, broke into the van of Pat Burns widow during his funeral and snagged a bunch of memorabilia that was due for a charity auction. If there is a hell, that clown has a special spot reserved I'm hoping.
As if the Minnesota Vikings weren't already treating their fanbase so well this season, with one circus after the next, they're upped the ante: they're talking moving to Los Angeles now. The Vikes lease at the Metrodome expires after next season, whether there is one or not.
If you're at all an NBA fan, and want a great look at the drama queens that are the Miami Heat, check out this podcast with Bill Simmons and Dan Le Batard in which they dissect where the Heat are, and where they're going. Simmons figures Chris Bosh will be ultimately dealt - I'm hoping somewhere really happening like Sacramento or Memphis - while Le Batard says it'll be Dwayne Wade that gets moved. Great stuff. The Heat, if you haven't heard, are in Cleveland tomorrow night.
At even strength, where he plays the majority of his shifts, Toronto Maple Leaf winger Phil Kessel is tied for 160th in NHL scoring. He's 2 points ahead of defenceman, and not exactly scoring machine, Mike Komisarek. Oh, and the Leafs blew a 3-1 lead and lost in overtime to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Can Ron Wilson anytime now, will you?
Another week in the NFL books, another fine for Pittsburgh Steeler James Harrison. This time, Harrison was fined for a helmet shot to the chest of Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick who was allegedly defenceless. Looking at it, seems Zinedine Zidane's famed head butt to Marco Materazzi in the World Cup final of 2006 was a stiffer shot, minus pads, and didn't get dinged $25k if I recall.
Jim Rome says Derek Jeter doesn't just need to drink some "reality potion", as someone in the New York Yankees organization has suggested, but that a keg of would be more appropriate. When one of the top shortstops in the game - in his prime - in Troy Tulowitzki signs for $16 million a year, how does Jeter figure he's worth more?
Tomorrow, FIFA will announce which nations will play host to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. There's a breakdown for 2018 here, for which Russia is the fav, and one here for 2022, for which the United States is expected to win the bidding.

Barcelona bitch-slap Real Madrid
Barcelona left no doubt who the best side in Spain, if not the world, are after an absolute dominant performance against visiting Real Madrid. Barca shredded the Real defence wide, in the middle, over the top...whatever way they wanted to attack they did, and rendered guys like Mehmet Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo invisible. Damn impressive. 5-0 final, and could've pushed double that with the odd break. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho says Real weren't humiliated says , as the loss is easy to deal with given how emphatic it was. Deadspin has the highlites here if you missed it.
Jon Heyman at SI.com takes a look at MLB's hot stove league, which should heat up considerably in the coming days, and where certain players may end up.
How important is Tom Brady in the New England area? Important enough that stories about whether he's having hair transplant treatments makes the news.
ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd says Derek Jeter is the "family values politician who has an affair...selling one thing and doing another". Presumably he means selling he's all about team? Cowherd also argues that Jeter has been overpaid his entire career because power hitters and aces make the kind of money he's made, not guys whose numbers compare to Alan Trammell, Barry Larkin and Roberto Alomar historically. He finished comparing Johnny Damon's 2009 against Jeter's 2010. Damon hit .283 with 82 RBI and a .365 OBP, Jeter .270, 67 RBI and .340. The Yankees wouldn't pay Damon, who Cowherd says was still better defensively and more useful at the top of the order, $7 million. So offering Jeter $15 million is extremely generous. Interesting take. Oh, and someone in the Yankees camp says that Jeter needs to take a "reality potion". Remember how sour Jeter was for years after A-Rod's comments about Jeter never having to lead and it being different hitting in the #2 hole? Have to figure this has him carrying a lifelong grudge by comparison.
NFL jersey's...camouflage style. No, for real. If you rock one of these, you're a certifiable piece of trash.
The Miami Heat are said to be questioning whether Erik Spoelstra is the right coach for them. I'm going to guess he's got a few issues with the make-up of his team in response. So if they move to Pat Riley and they remain a poor team, albeit a better than .500 team, what then? Here's a damning stat: LeBron James has 11 offensive boards on the entire season. 11. 0.6 per game. If that isn't the sign of a guy content to put it up from the outside, or watch someone else do the dirty work, I don't know what is. That average represents a career low.
I couldn't even count how many versions of the same we've had, but here's the latest look at the top WAG's - wives and girlfriends - in the soccer world. A top 50, if you will.
If you like your toast in the morning, maybe you'll like it even more with the logo of your favorite team burnt onto it? Warning: word is the Toronto Blue Jays version sees the toast pop out extra early.
Best interception ever?
In a month that has been polluted by creepy 'stache's, it is only fitting that the close of the month sees the ante raised with "Hedo Rick" and his dance below.
The final submission for FIFA Goal of the Year comes from Barcelona's Lionel Messi with this gem against Valencia.

"Where's he gonna go, Cincinnati?"
Another Thursday night NFL game goes tonight with the Chicago Bears visiting the Miami Dolphins. Hope you've been following the Prime Time Picks this year, hitting at a healthy 75%. I'm playing the Fish at -1.5.
Word out of the MLB meetings in Orlando is that St. Louis Cardinal and Hall of Fame lock Albert Pujols wants an A-Rod type contract in the 10-year, $300 million range. Can't imagine it happening. Think we're a long ways off from ever seeing that kind of deal again, particularly from a market like St. Louis. That, and Pujols has had a lot more injuries up to age 32 - the same time A-Rod signed his extension - for a deal of that length to make sense.
The date may have changed, but the song remains the same: Portland Trail Blazer Greg Oden has an injury that has knocked him out for the year. He'll need microfracture surgery on his knee.
The Detroit Tigers could be big players this off-season, with $52 million coming off their books from the 2010 payroll.
ProFootballTalk looks at the dilemma the Philadelphia Eagles have on their hands with Michael Vick, who is 4-0 in games he starts this year and lighting up the stat sheet. The answer may lie in franchising him, but players are never happy with those deals, especially, I'd guess, a guy who already lost millions thanks to a jail stint and no doubt would want more years and guaranteed dollars.
Tiger Woods is now on Twitter. What a perfect environment for a guy to speak like a robot in 140 characters. What's next, Derek Jeter? And what is it with these say-nothing Nike guys?
For some reason, the Arizona Diamondbacks are contemplating dealing super talent Justin Upton, and the New York Yankees are among the interested. DBacks GM Kevin Towers will know the Yankees young talent well, given he worked for GM Brian Cashman this past year. Interesting.
The Calgary Flames traded Brett Sutter - who recently, and drunkenly, beat up a cab driver - and Ian White - who drove drunk while with Toronto - to Carolina for Babchuk and Kostoplous. That kind of behavior will play far better among the 'necks.
Derek Jeter is said to be after a four-year deal from the New York Yankees. A little more realistic than the initial talk of wanting a sex-year pact, but still a year or two long by my estimation. There is also word from the Yankees side of things that at least one executive is saying the team should play hardball with Jeter, because "where's he gonna go, Cincinnati?" This is gonna get more and more interesting unless Jeter sees himself for what he is: a player on the decline.
In a bit of a surprise, it seems that MLB will indeed expand its playoffs for 2012. Finally, they get it right. And to those dreaming of a salary cap, I'll repeat: it will never, ever happen.
There's no shortage of Chris Bosh beatdowns lately, but this is hands down the best. Including a definition: "Like A Bosh" [idiom, ~2010]: When someone or something desires the limelight only to wilt under the newfound pressure.
First up for the FIFA goal of the year nominees, South Africa’s Siphiwe Tshabalala’s opening goal of the World Cup v Mexico. As mentioned yesterday, I'll be including one of these daily.

"What should I do?"
Troy Polamalu got all up in Roger Goodell's hair over the crackdown on hits in the NFL, saying that part of the problem may be that Goodell wields too much power and influence with no checks and balances like a proper government. Silly Troy, thinking this is a democratic business he's in.
A quick peak at the NHL Albatross players. Not surprisingly, other than he's just a dozen or so games into his contract, Ilya Kovalchuk leads the way.
Here's a peak at the ten issues facing the New York Yankees this off-season. #2 is already taken care of. Speaking of #2, Derek Jeter's people say his value to the team can't be overestimated. Oh, but it can...and has. One ring as the vaunted Captain, last I checked. The always hilarious SportsPickle has a great article saying Jeter is demanding to be paid $1 million per intangible.
Fox Sports Soccer looks at the ultra convoluted playoff system employed by the MLS. Memo to Don Garber: simple is good. People get simple, especially if they're just new to your league.
Dallas Cowboy Roy Williams has had himself a nice year. He's been one of the better Cowboys, for what that is worth. But saying he thinks the Cowboys can win nine straight is comical.
Rogers announced yesterday that the Buffalo Bills hosting Chicago Bears game this Sunday in Toronto is sold out, even though you can easily get four tickets in the lower and upper bowls. Word is the fine print of the announcement read "well, compared to a Toronto Blue Jays game the place sure will be packed."
For a few of you I know all too well, top 10 things you didn't know about Jägermeister.
A whole lot of Arianny Celeste pics, not including her Playboy pics from this month, which Hugh Hefner's legal team seems to be working overtime to keep off the 'net and pull off when they do hit.
Didn't take South Park long to lampoon LeBron James "What should I do?" Nike ads, mixing BP into the mix.
Here are the 25 least manly things in sports. Pretty freaking comprehensive, it must be said.
Weird video from a soccer league in Brazil. A player - and I can't imagine he's in the top flight given his physique - is getting ready to take a corner kick when a fan jumps out of the stands and, well, see for yourself.

Derek Cheater?
Had a couple discussions yesterday on the "Derek Cheater" bit from a couple nights ago where he sold that he got hit by a pitch when it clearly hit his bat, so I'll summarize here. (1) if you think that Jeter is above doing what it takes to win, you're kidding yourself. He's got as much ego as the next guy, or he would have moved to third when Alex Rodriguez came to the Yankees a few years back because A-Rod was a far better shortstop than Jeter. (2) To pretend he's some pure and great guy that would never do such a thing is to ignore that when he hurt himself in Toronto years back colliding with Ken Huckaby, he treated Huckaby like he did something wrong when he was just playing the game the right way - something some act like only Jeter does - he wouldn't even answer Huckaby's calls to apologize, vilifying him for no reason. A saint he is not. (3) If A-Rod did this, he'd be absolutely annihilated by the media, but with Jeter, it is merely a discussion (3) Baseball isn't golf and guys don't call penalties on themselves or correct umpires for errant calls, so there's no big deal here. In short, pretending he's somehow above the pack when it comes to morality is to ignore reality, and logic. He's a competitive guy, and good for him for that, especially when he needs to get on base any way he can of late. Oh, and Jeter admits he wasn't hit. Am sure the umpire is thrilled.
It might be the most ridiculous stat I've heard all year in baseball: Canadian boy, and Cincinnati Red, Joey Votto has yet to pop out to the infield this season. MVP? In a league with Albert Pujols, just maybe.
Darrelle Revis kept Randy Moss to 58-yards over two games last year and called Moss a "slouch" in the aftermath, marking the first time in memory that word was used as smack talk. They'll be facing each other this weekend in Jersey. How much would a Jets loss ratchet up the pressure on Rex Ryan and the Jets? Is there a neutral fan that isn't hoping the Patriots pound them? And who would think that just a few years out of SpyGate, the Pats look like the class operation of the two?
Now that Entourage Season 7 has wrapped, Dallas Mavs owner Mark Cuban has more time to talk sports and he wasted no time in calling out LeBron James for how he "humiliated" Cleveland and Ohio in jumping to Miami. Oh, and there was a study conducted that says LeBron James isn't as popular as he used to be. Well, knock me over with a feather.
Former Toronto FC coach - and the "former" sounds so good - Preki says that he has no regrets over his time in Toronto, while speaking of the comments made against his regime by Dwayne DeRosario and Julian De Guzman as merely that of "a couple Canadian guys". All class, that Pricki. Here's a bit of trivia on his replacement Nick Dasovic, who is nothing if not a breath of fresh air after that stale rain cloud departed: when he studied for his UEFA B coaching license, in his class was one Jose Mourinho.
The San Diego Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars game is going to be blacked out this weekend in the San Diego area. 7,000 tickets left over tends to do that.
Floyd Mayweather must really want no part of Manny Pacquiao, what with his ridiculous act of late that now sees him facing 8 charges, including 4 felonies, that could see him do 34 years if he were convicted on all charges and got the maximum sentence.
Derek Jeter's act...check out the look at the umpire. Pretty sure the source of this video is an extra on Jersey Shore.
I've seen some bad fumbles in my time, but check this one out in last weekend's Toronto Argos game when Ronald Flemons drops the ball while touched by exactly nobody.

Labor Day with no CFL talk
So after watching that LSU-North Carolina line go all the way up to -10 from the -6 I got in at, had to be feeling pretty good about the Tigers on Saturday, especially when they rolled to a 30-10 halftime lead. The final? LSU wins by 6. I push, and a crap load of people get smoked by Vegas.
This Toronto Blue Jays on SportsNet One bit is turning real interesting, with senior citizens mobilizing to protest. Guess the younger Jays fans don't really care a bunch.
The St. Louis Cardinals are looking like the first team since 1989 to miss the playoffs despite having three starting pitchers with ERA's under 3.00. That's hard to do.
With Matt Leinart released by Arizona, and so far, his former coach at USC Pete Carroll not exactly tripping over himself to get him to his new team in Seattle, doesn't that say a whole lot about Leinart?
Why is the Red Zone Channel not available in Canada?
The San Diego Padres have dropped ten straight to make what should've been a comfortable run to the NL West title a race again. What is worse than that is their schedule down the stretch is brutal. They've got seven home games this week against the LA Dodgers and rising San Francisco Giants, then a 10-game roadie through Colorado, St. Louis and at LA, then home to Cincinnati and Chicago, before finishing in San Francisco.
San Diego isn't the only divisional leader with some big concerns. The Texas Rangers have Cliff Lee battling through some back issues, and now will be minus Josh Hamilton for a time thanks to some injured ribs.
I'm sure both the state of Ohio is thrilled that LeBron James is picking Ohio State to beat Miami this weekend.
Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, now of Manchester City, is positioning his former team as small time relative to City. Suppose he forgets that relative to his days at Arsenal, his contributions are small time at City. Of course, Adebayor is also the guy who famously wore an Arsenal shirt in an interview last year, while he was a Man City player.
Why paraphrase when the source nails it this brilliantly? In this case, the source is Joel Sherman. The subject: Derek Jeter. Says Sherman: "If his name were not Derek Jeter, he already — at best — would be hitting eighth or ninth as the least productive performer in the daily lineup or — at worst — would be sitting a few times a week as the Yankees gauged if Eduardo Nunez could be the shortstop of the future, as early as 2011. But Jeter is so tenured that segments of the media still talk about giving him a three- or four-year extension this offseason at $20 million-plus annually. If he gets anything close to that, it will be based on emotion and nostalgia. And before someone says the Yankees must sign him because, well, he is Derek Jeter consider the reverse: Doesn’t Derek Jeter need the Yankees at least as badly as they need him? Or do you think Gatorade and Ford and the rest of his corporate partners want to keep selling brand loyalty through Jeter with him wearing a Cardinal or Tiger uniform?"
Good to see NFL analyst Dan Hampton, in discussing who he likes in Thursday night's opener that sees Minnesota visit New Orleans, suggest the Vikings need to "go down there and hit that town like Katrina." Idiot.

Mega 90210 entry...
Here's the Florida Marlins situation, in short (as possible). For years, the Marlins have cried poor - bad stadium, bad part of town, bad lease agreement that saw them get no parking revenue for example. They claimed to be a money losing operation and kept squeezing Miami for a new stadium, a squeeze that ultimately worked and a new stadium is being built. Recently, financial documents leaked that show they're not only nicely profitable and pocketing revenue sharing dollars rather than spending them to improve the team, but they've also collected millions in parking. Buster Olney (ESPN Insider required) says the government should investigate. And where is Bud Selig in all this? He had to have known about this deception. Guess he's and the feds are more worried about PED investigations for guys out of the game that used in a time where there was no rule against it than protecting the people who support the team and are taxpayers. Slimy, real slimy stuff, especially when your read the Marlins are among the most profitable teams in baseball.
For a purported "world championship", the World Basketball Championships sure doesn't have a big feel to it, does it? Little coverage on TV and in papers, and no buzz at all. I'd wager if you asked 10 general sports fans, 3 max would know where the tourney is (Turkey, by the way). Of all the team sports, only soccer gets it right on its own. The rest have their biggest stages at the Olympics.
Not sure why SportsNet stays with New York Yankee broadcasts through "God Bless America" in the 7th inning. Less sure why that and anthems remain part of domestic sports.
The European transfer window for its soccer clubs that just closed saw teams spend a combined £325,000, or $526,000,000 (Cdn). Crazy money.
I don't think the NFL going to 18 games will ultimately prove to be backbreaking for players bodies. If anything, the lack of rest they get in the off season and with two-a-day camps has to do as much damage as anything. But to hear Jerry Jones talk of how there are provisions in the CBA to go all the way to 22 games seems excessive. Word is the move to 18 games will see each team play at least a game in a non-NFL market - think London, Barcelona, etc. - and add a second bye week. The Super Bowl would push to mid-February and coincide with Ontario's Family Day weekend, which I'm all for. What says "family" more than "daddy's hungover"?
Trademark looks in the NFL. Yes, of course Wade Phillips blank stare when something goes afoul made the mix. Not sure how "The Manning Look" didn't make it. You know that one, the utterly stunned look when something goes wrong.
Almost a quarter of Toronto Raptors games this year will appear on SportsNet One, which isn't available to about half of Ontario homes right now, and more than half of Canadian homes. This is what is known as providing a public service. For me, SportsNet One has resulted in Yankee games on TV almost nightly, so am pretty happy with its arrival.
Cliff Lee has an ERA of 8.35 his last five starts for the Texas Rangers. This is only slightly above his career average ERA pitching in Arlington, Texas. For those thinking he'd resign in Texas: no chance.
A couple people of former New York Yankees - unnamed - say Derek Jeter's pride will make him insist he get A-Rod money in his next contract with the Yankees. I know it is only money, and the Yankees could probably triple their payroll comfortably, but that's a mistake waiting to happen. Jeter's defence his slipping, and so is his offence. You want pride, DJ? Sign for two more years, get your 3,000th hit sometime next year, maybe win another ring or two, retire.
Pitch F/X, which among other things, tracks pitchers speeds and locations, only has data dating back to the 2008 for regular season. But, Cincinnati Red Aroldis Chapman's 103.9mph fastball in his debut on Tuesday night was the fastest regular season pitch ever recorded. 103.9? Wow.
Audrina Patridge on Dancing With The Stars? Interesting.
A whole heap of video here today, and all good stuff.
Up first, check out what Arizona Diamondback Adam LaRoche had played for teammate Kelly Johnson for his first two at-bats. That's what you do when your team sucks, I guess. Funny stuff.
A real baseball brawl last night. Check this out. Washington National Nyjer Morgan charges the mound, misses with a punch, and gets on the wrong end of a beautiful clothesline.
Another angle here, and Nyjer Morgan F-bombing the fans (not seen) and pounding his chest after getting tossed during a brawl. Classy. That said, throwing at the guy for doing something perfectly legal and not dirty is bush.
Oh I like the sounds of this!
In case you missed Roger Federer's "tweener" a couple days back, check it out.

Well, not sure why the NHL thought it was a great idea to have both NHL playoff series going the same night in the Conference Finals, but they're finally breaking up that pattern tonight with the Western Conference series getting the extra day in between games two and three. The Eastern Conference series moves to Montreal tonight and Damien Cox of the Toronto Star thinks it may be time for the Canadiens to give Carey Price a go. So much for going with who brought you to the dance. What if Price starts and bombs, then what? The Habs won't have Andrei Markov in the lineup, his season is done after knee surgery that will keep him out for six months.
The Phoenix Suns are not only getting pounded in their Western Conference series, the LA Lakers are doing it playing the Suns up-tempo style. The Lakers were 124-112 winners last night to take a 2-0 series lead.
Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho - whose ego knows no bounds - thinks that winning the Champions League is bigger than the World Cup. Different, perhaps, and I do accept his point that you could argue you're the world's best team given you can get players from everywhere, but no chance is it more prestigious. The World Cup is once every four years and ask anybody at all connected to the game who won the last World Cup and they'll say "Italy" in a heartbeat. Quick, who won the Champions League four years ago? Inter Milan faces Bayern Munich Saturday in Madrid for the Champions League final.
Joel Sherman of the NY Post writes that A-Rod is the no-doubt New York Yankees go-to guy in a big moment if they have a choice, a change from the past to be sure. Not mentioned yesterday, but worth mentioning that the New York Yankees had Nick Swisher up on the steps holding a bad, ready to pinch hit for Derek Jeter in the bottom of the 9th with the game on the line. Has Jeter been pinch hit for in the last decade plus? The Tampa Bay Rays continued their roll last night in pounding the Yanks 10-2 to move four games up in the East.
Tom Verducci at SI.com looks at whether the Washington Nationals, surprisingly competitive this year, are being too careful with Stephen Strasburg. I've got two words to answer that in the "negative": Mark Prior.
What does Al-Qaeda have to do with sports? Well, when they're plotting revenge on Holland and Denmark over their depictions of Allah, and the World Cup is looming, lots as it turns out. Love how one person can do something they deem offensive and it is an all out assault planned on a sporting event, team or country. Very reasonable.
I'll acknowledge the Toronto Blue Jays are beating everybody's expectations - including yours, if you're thinking of lying and telling us different - but remember this: they were 27-16 a year ago today and in first place in the AL East, and we know how that ended up (28 games back, if you didn't). That, and as Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star noted yesterday, the Jays have only played 14 to date against the best of the AL, and are a less than stellar 3-11 in those games.
The International Ice Hockey Federation took a swipe at Sidney Crosby, among others, for skipping the second rate World Championships, insinuating they lack loyalty to the programs that made them rich and famous. Translation: they're sour they don't have those guys over in Germany to help sell tickets to a nothing event. Criticizing those players for their fatigue and comparing them to miners is ridiculous. Crosby, as one example, went from the Stanley Cup win last year to a camp in Calgary less than two months later, then into the Olympic camp, and into a season with the Penguins. At some point, the gas tank has to be tapped.
The captain of New Zealand's World Cup entry predicts England will win the World Cup for the first time since 1966, for what that is worth, beating either Spain or Brazil in the final. On the other side of the coin, American player Jozy Altidore bumped into David Beckham at an LA Lakers game a couple nights back and told Beckham the U.S. would beat his England side on the opening weekend 3-0. If you're not a fan of the game and looking for a team to cheer for that is a bit of an underdog, take the U.S. They won't annoy you with the diving tactics that certain other countries can't let go of (looking at you, Portugal and Italy), and play with speed from the opening whistle on.
It is a good thing Tiger Woods doesn't have friends like Kansas City Chiefs wideout Dwayne Bowe, who let a rather large secret loose when he talked of how his Chiefs teammates would fly ladies in from around the country on road trips, including sending messages to girls on teammates Facebook accounts and flying those girls in for them.

Olé, Olé, Oh Leighton!
Who knew that the soccer-ripping-off "Olé! Olé! Olé!" chant that many Habs fans think they invented was really a lead in to the much more original "Olé, Olé, Oh Leighton!" Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Michale Leighton is perfect through two games after last night's 3-0 shutout to give him two in a row on the series as the Flyers took care of business at home again for a 2-0 series lead. As for his counterpart in the Montreal goal, Jaroslav Halak, he's now looking a lot more beatable and as though midnight has struck for his Cinderella run. Needless to say, the Habs are in trouble.
In worse trouble, however, are the San Jose Sharks after losing 4-2 last night as the Chicago Black Hawks will be heading home with a 2-0 series lead after taking a pair in California.
Why the Phoenix Suns are in a lot of trouble after losing Game 1 to the LA Lakers: Lakers coach Phil Jackson is 46-0 in playoff series after winning Game 1, including 22-0 with the Lakers.
Safe to say that much like last year at this time, the New York Yankees bullpen is their soft spot, at least if the last 10 days are any indication. Leading 5-1 against the lifeless Boston Red Sox, Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera combined to blow their second lead in three days, and they're the reliable ones in that pen this year. Also a problem for the Yanks: going into last night, Derek Jeter had swung at just 19.8 percent of pitches out of the strike zone since 2002. This year, however, Jeter has swung at 33.3 percent of all pitches out of the strike zone. Might explain the plummeting average the last couple weeks. All three are going to need to be much better with the awesome Tampa Bay Rays visiting for a couple of games starting today.
Word is Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas - a top five to ten player in the world - wants to bolt London and head to Barcelona. That'd be a terrible loss for Arsenal, but Fabregas might not want to follow in the same path of Arsenal-captain-to-Barcelona footsteps of Thierry Henry, didn't exactly work out fantastic for the player.
Deadspin is running some of the best soccer chants of the year - the Liverpool Europa League bit is my fav - and you can check out the rest here.
Drunk Soccer League? Hell freaking yes. Somewhere, Paul Gascoigne is limbering up.
After years of intensive research, I can officially confirm that if you wear sunglasses indoors, you're a douchebag. Rock stars exempted.
The Toronto Raptors may not have won the NBA Draft Lottery last night - that was the Washington Wizards - but their remaining fans were treated to a draft lottery day playoff treat when one Wince Carturd stepped up to the free throw line with roughly thirty ticks on the clock and his Orlando Magic trailing by three. Carturd, who shoots free throws at a mid-80's clip, missed both. Oh sweet, delicious karma. The Magic are down 2-0 to the Boston Celtics with the series moving to Boston.
Very classy of Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez, a first rate talent, to blast his manager for benching him when H-Ram took six seconds to get to a ball he missed because he was loafing it to the ball. Problem is he's such a talent that unless he wants Fredi Gonzalez to keep his job, he likely won't. Shame he's such a dickhead that refuses to apologize to his manager or teammates, who came out in support of the benching.
Toronto FC are at Vancouver tonight to face the Whitecaps in the latest round of the Canadian Championship. A win will wrap up the title for TFC for the second year running.

Gretzky would pocket $22.5 million if Coyotes sold
Alone, the terms "Pittsburgh Steelers fan", "gynecologist" and "The Price is Right" aren't that funny, but when you put them all together and the guy doesn't go with the traditional $1 bid when he thinks the rest have overbid, well, that is worth a look.

Raising the Bar
It didn't take long for the Congress grandstanding to begin. One Congressman wants A-Rod called on the carpet to see what else they can find out. Right, because the first time was so illuminating. Since these clowns figure they can review what happened in baseball five years ago and criticize, wonder who gets to call Congress on the carpet for letting the Wall Streeters take the global economy down the toilet? Way to keep your eye on the prize, fools...hope Tony Romo's girlfriend isn't a listener of the Jim Rome Show, where one caller dubbed her Jessicow Blimpson...Minnesota Wild defenceman Cal Clutterbuck has been the target of Don Cherry of late, and one Wild fan fired back with probably the best thing you could call Grapes on a variety of levels: Liberace. Amazing. Thanks to ROTR for passing this my way...good of an Ontario Provincial Police officer to get nailed - on duty - for breaking the province's racing laws, driving 165 kph in a 100 zone...the pressure of the Prime Time Picks got to me. I admit it. So I hit some 'roids. Forgive me for last nights dud of a pick...there are several soccer friendlies - and not so friendlies, like Mexico visiting the U.S. tonight - including England travelling to Spain to face the European Champions. English captain John Terry has vowed that if the Spanish fans continue with rascist taunts of England's black players, they'll walk off the field. Good for England. I'm sure, like the ill advised Spanish Olympic hoops picture, that the taunts are in tribute to the black players. Or not...it is no secret that I'm not a huge fan of Derek Jeter's personality - ask him if the sky is blue and he'll waffle on an answer - and even less a fan of the results of his leadership. But his plan to address the A-Rod steroids situation once and only once when camp gets together for the media is a great one. It'll minimize the distraction, at least to him, by not letting it become a daily discussion...Baseball Prospectus ran its projected finishes for the 2009 season for all teams and has the Boston Red Sox and Yankees finishing a game apart at the top of the AL East with the top records in the AL. A .500 season is forecast for the Toronto Blue Jays - I've got the under there. The Hardball Times ran 100 trials of the 2009 season and had the Yankees first in the East with an average of 101 wins...the NHL's best of the west - San Jose - dropped in to face the beasts of the east in Boston last night, and the Sharks exploded for three goals in a little over six minutes to win 5-2...Bar Rafaeli rode a RM plug last month to the cover of SI's Swimsuit Issue. Good stuff. More Bar from SI here. Also shockingly impressive in this issue is Danica Patrick..have a great Wednesday, back with your PTP later.
3:37pm UPDATE: Your PTP is up.
