Well played, Boras

  • Jon Heyman's latest at SI.com includes this quote on JP Ricciardi from a rival exec: "no one gets to rebuild twice without going to the playoffs once." Seems perfectly logical to me. Heyman also covers the circling-the-drain Boston Red Sox.
  • Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable cracked one of his assistant coaches in the mouth. The Raiders Commitment To Excrement is ongoing, and going strong.
  • just what the world needed. Jay Glazer at Fox Sports is convinced that it won't be long until a certain has-been QB will be in discussions with the Minnesota Vikings about a comeback. No, seriously.
  • Olympic wrestling gold medalist and now pro-wrestler Kurt Angle will be making a court appearance today after being arrested for possession of HGH, stalking his ex-girlfriend. Oh it's true, it's damn true.
  • the NFLPA has informed players that they best prepare for a potential lockout in 2011. They can't be serious, can they? The league that has it all and has its players under non-guaranteed contracts wants more? Sad.
  • what did Chavo Guerrero do to have to endure a weekly humiliation at the hands of Hornswoggle every Monday Night Raw?
  • UFC heavyweight and Hall of Famer Randy Couture gives great interview.
  • the Washington Nationals signed Stephen Strasburg with all of a minute to spare, a record deal of $15.1 million for the flamethrowing rookie, but word is his agent Scott Boras was looking for something closer to say, $50 million. Had he not signed, Strasburg would've gone back into the draft next year and likely end up getting taken by...the Washington Nationals.
  • Question: why is there braille on the drive-thru ATM at my local bank? Or a sign at the local corner store declaring dog's not permissible in the store except for seeing eye dogs?
  • the next season of Dancing With The Stars will feature Chuck Lidell and Michael Irvin, among others. I've got Lidell to get knocked out early.
  • fresh off the opening weekend, 12 of the EPL's 20 sides will get it on over the next two days as they go full bore into their schedule. 8 teams had games pushed back, including Arsenal who take on Celtic in Champions League play, because of European competitions also on the go. Free money today on Chelsea at -1 -101 at Sunderland. Get down at Pinnacle.
Have a great Tuesday.

Chelsea was down 1-0 at the half, now up 3-1 with 20 to go. SO EASY!

bukkake ... you used that one already. yawn.

24,000 at the argos game.
21,000 at the toronto fc game.
one of these games was sold out. the other, well, let's just say -- wasn't.

CFL has years of "tradition" on its side.
that, and since all teams (all eight of them ... what a league!) are canadian, they get two markets watching their games.
it'll take toronto fc a long time to make strides into the rest of the country. it's only year three.
even the raptors viewing numbers are shit as such.

football games take for-freaking-ever to play (term used loosely) too. soccer games are done in less than two hours. easier to scoop some ratings when your game takes half a day to finish.

still, 24,000 for a friday-night argos home game is terrible.

The Argo's are terrible period. They play in a terrible sports city that supports nothing outside the Leafs.

TFC won't have years to build tradition. The team and league will fold like every other attempted soccer foray into North America.

The game is bland and boring and no one cares.

GBVH always uses the Argos as the CFL "Reference Standard" team. How about look at a franchise like Saskatchewan, or heaven forbid, the Eskimos, to draw comparisons too. The Argos are a waste of time in a city where "entertainment dollars" are spread so thin already.

Thank god a TFC game only takes 2 hours, 3-3.5 hours would really hurt the game, think about all the sleepy soccer fans falling asleep before the match ended at a nil-nil draw. EXCITING!

Sigh. That's the best youse got?
I know Football Jocks ain't exactly known for their wit, but come on.

Punt.
Catch.
Juke.
Commercial.
Timeout.
Two-yard run.
Flag.
Commercial.
Review.
Commercial.
Flag.
Incomplete pass.
Commercial.
Flag.
Review.
Punt.

etc.

gbvh said...

So the Argos are a waste and a failure because there is too much competition for the entertainment dollar.
And the Eskimontons and Saskatchewans aren't a waste and a failure because there isn't.

Sounds about right.
Stay proud, my friends.

You really could not overstate how proud I am; proud to be an Alberta boy and 3 provinces away from Ontario.

On a serious note, reading these past two postings of yours, GBVH, has made me realize the error of my ways. I now know what a stupid, dull game North American football really is.

I feel foolish for having dedicated the past 20 years of my life as a player, coach, official and fan of this dull game.

I now understand what an action packed spectacle soccer is and will devote my life to the sport. First I need a few pointers...

I need a team. I will obviously rock a Team Poland jersey as my last name is Polish (even though I have never been to Poland and might need help locating it on a map). During World Cup I will rock that bitch all over E-Town and proclaim "Poland Rules" with many other Polish descended douchebags that have never been to Poland. I will probably get a Polish licence plate thingy too.

But I need a "club team". Probably best I get a North American and European one, right? I like low scoring affairs, so some teams that can really nail down more than their share of nil-nil nailbiters would be appreciated. I will buy scarfs and jerseys when teams are decided upon.

Also, I will be handing in my resignation as a football coach to my association tonight. I would like to transition into a soccer referee spending my Tuesday evenings officiating mens league games between two oposite angry ethnicities. Perhaps one night I will be a fortunate as many other soccer refs as to be threatened and assaulted in the parking lot post-game by an angry Lebanese player whose team just lost a 3-0 blowout to North Edmonton Jamaica United.

Does anyone have any extra yellow cards I can borrow so I can begin this awesome transformation?

Do I sound smarter yet as a soccer fan, GBVH? I sure feel smarter...

gbvh said...

par for the course, bukkakes.
not that i got through it all.

you should take the time, it's the new "smart, soccer lovin'" Bukkake posting.
