Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 - Stop this senseless slaughter!

Mercifully, and inexplicably, the ALCS will take a day off today. Maybe that will help cool off the smoking hot Tampa Bay Rays, 13-4 winners (and 22-5 in two games at Fenway) to take a 3-1 series lead. I know Red Sox Nation will boast about 2004 and coming back from 3-0, but this year, not happening...Why I always said Manny Ramirez was a far better hitter than David Ortiz: Ortiz has one RBI in 31 postseason at-bats this season...this week's Sunday Night Football match-up may not be great, with Seattle visiting Tampa Bay, but the broadcast is about to get a whole lot better with news that John Madden is sitting this one out and the fantastic Cris Collinsworth is in...I'm not surprised Dana White went off about Elite XC being a threat to the credibility of the MMA game, just that it took this long...want a cheap NFL ticket? How about the Cincinnati Bengals, with 3,000 tickets available for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on stubhub.com, including many at half price...Brett Favre called Tony Romo to offer encouragement after his broken finger shelved him. Of course, in typical self serving, "ain't-I-a-great-guy?" fashion he let it be know he called. He says Romo is a top five player in the NFL regardless of position. Sorry, Favre. Even as a Cowboy fan I can't agree with that right now, not based on his play this calendar year...speaking of the Cowboys, they made the only deal of significance at the NFL's way-too-early trade deadline, picking up Detroit Lions wideout Roy Williams. Question: can Williams play corner at all? They've got a huge need there with Pacman Jones suspended for at least four games. It says here that with Williams demanding a trade and the Lions going nowhere, the Cowboys gave up way too much for him unless he suddenly becomes all-pro...the Detroit Lions are 0-5 for the third time this decade...not sure what is more impressive, that soccer giant FC Barcelona is launching a bid for an MLS team for Miami, or that the MLS expansion fee is now up to $50 million (USD). By comparison, Toronto FC's fee to enter a mere three years back was $10 million...not sure where some of the sports media out there get the idea that a Boston Red Sox vs. L.A. Dodgers World Series would be a "disgrace" because the Sox are still paying Manny Ramirez' salary. Players DO NOT get paid in the playoffs. Period. Not to mention that seems a pretty unlikely matchup now...the New Jersey Nets move to Brooklyn is on hold until at least 2011. Wince Carturd's contract expires before the 2011 season. Seems to me Brooklyn wants to leave the toxic waste in Jersey. Wise move...have a great Wednesday.

I'd be more concerned if he coul;d play QB, considering Romos injury. But he is a heck of a receiver and makes that offense ridiculous once Romo comes back...

Yea, it's too bad Seattle got a Sunday nighter...

It'll be an ass-whooping.

Brad Johnson will do fine - he will hand the ball off to Barber 25 times, hit Witten short, and they'll play possession football as much as possible. Having both your starting corners out could be a disaster.

I think you are underating the threat of the big play with Dallas when Romo is in. Defenses will not be scared of anything deep, as I don't think Brad is even capable of throwing a ball 20 yards. Barber will be getting shut down, the Bucs will own your boys on the 26th. Good thing Halloween is coming up, as our D is going to leave your O so beaten they'll be completely unrecognizable...

"the terrific Chris Collinsworth" ???

never disagreed with you more TBek. If given the chance I would slap the face off that smug little bastard.

I'm no Madden fan , but I would listed to the fat old man drone on for 5 games over Collinsworth for 5 minutes.

Mind you , you also like Steve Simmons and Bob McCown who pretty much round out my three least favorite sports broadcasters / reporters out there ...

do agree with you that Dallas will be fine with Johnson at QB. He is a much more serviceable back-up than most teams have. Plus , your boy Romo is extremely over rated.

Good to see another big mouthed clown join Jerry "Horrors of Plastic Surgery" Jones circus in Dallas. Welcome to the Big "D" , Roy Williams. You are a true fit here.

i find most nfl tv guys self-absorbed, dull as fuck and embarrassingly hyperbolic.

collinsworth is self-absorbed and hyperbolic too. but nowhere near to the degree of all the other clowns. and, at least, he's not dull.

so, by process of elimination, i'd take him easy over any other of those tools.

and, yes, it IS possible to be "ridiculously hyperbolic" and "dull" at the same time. it's what makes it so painful.

Why I dig Collinsworth:

1. He actually, you know, speaks English. The ability to construct a sentence with a beginning, middle and end is key when communicating. That he mixes in a thought is a bonus and puts him ahead of 99% of the broadcasters out there in any sport. For examples of guys incapable of same, see "Madden, John" and "Ditka, Mike".

2. He's not vanilla. He'll hammer a guy where deserved. He was the first guy to nail T.O. for complaining about not getting the ball a few weeks ago, and as far as I could tell, the first guy that had the math (18 balls out of 60 or so) to back it up. The rest would've just gone with the first half of that.

3. He's a former player who doesn't remind you of that every five seconds or start a sentence "when I played..." (*cough* Phil Simms *cough*). Aikman is another that is great in that regard, though he's a lot less editorial.

4. He's intelligent enough that he's moved just outside of talking football with "the boys". That makes him a rarity and in my books, that's a good thing.

Curious Bukkake, you do a great job telling us who you don't like in the broadcast world, who DO you like?

Would first like to state that I forgot someone on my hated list. Did you ever see Chris Walby on the CFL broadcasts? That was fucking shameful. It was embarrasing to watch that fat cheesedick try to be funny.

A huge fan of two local sports talk hosts here in E-Town ; Bob Stauffer (630 CHED) and Jason Gregor (Team 1260). Love reading Mark Spector (National Post). Dave Hodge on TSN has always been someone I admired , going back to his broadcast days.

NFL wise , not particularly a "fan" of anyone ... find all the ex-players to be about the same with some sticking out as very annoying (Collinsworth , Terry Bradshaw , Deion Sanders). Actually don't mind listening to Marshall Faulk on NFL Network.

Oh , and loved Keith Jackson on NCAA on ABC broadcasts until he retired a couple years back. Just had that classic American laid back call to college football that added to games.
