Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 - Another Dinosaur Named Don That Needs To Die
I remain blown away by how much coverage soccer has on this side of the pond. Its now normal to hear SportsCentre types just refer to "Chelsea" without any context, such is how common it has become. I love it...Kansas City has the NFL bottom feeding Chiefs, baseball's perennial loser Royals, the last place Wizards in Major League Soccer, and in the Arena Football League, the last place Brigade led by one Quincy Carter. Tough times in K.C....Mike Mussina's won at least 10 games for 17 years, an AL record...former Oilers owner Peter Pocklington auctioned off his five Stanley Cup rings for $300,000. And I thought selling Gretz was bad. Word is current owner Daryl Katz bought them. Good for Katz...you'd think Don Imus, just back on radio after his ill-advised "nappy headed" comment on the Rutgers women's hoops team, might stay away from race, but nope, once a fool always a fool. Told that Adam Jones is black - as if he didn't know - he responded "there you go, now we know"...Shaquille O'Neal laid out Kobe Bryant in a rap while at a New York club, blaming Kobe for his divorce, and cracking on him for not winning a ring against the Celtics. Catch it below..Russia punked Spain at Euro Basket last year - in Spain - who's to say their soccer team can't punch the Spanish side in the mouth? Me, for one. You don't lose 4-1 a couple weeks back and recover that well...word is the Leafs will pick up a 1st round pick in 2009 if Mats Sundin signs with Montreal by July 1st. Doesn't sound like Sundin will do the Leafs any favours and in that regard, that is most fitting for all the Leafs did for him over the years…the CFL season kicks off this week. My predictions? Some quarterbacks will have changed teams, at least a couple squads will be in financial peril, the single point rule will remain lame, and the Argos will continue to suck. If only Pinnacle offered lines on these items other than the last one, which of course, you can hammer weekly...have a great Tuesday. A trio of vids worth checking out below.
A great vid from the late George Carlin on baseball vs. football, Shaq cracks on Kobe, and in what will likely be a daily addition, Jim Rome's Daily Burn...

i still think the soccer coverage should and could be better.
on the way home after the cro loss, the fan's sports update went something like this.
cito this, jp that. ernie this.
for about three minutes. it's toronto, understood. i get it.
"and at euro 2008, turkey beat croatia in penalties....and tonight in major league baseball ..."
Wow, Shaq thinks as terribly as he raps? Hard to imagine.
"I got smoked in the first round while playing alongside Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire, the team before that I played on ended up in the lottery - yeah, Kobe, kiss my ass, I'm miles beyond you!" And taking a shot at Kareem (if I understood his drivel correctly)? Didn't he just cut on Bill Walton not too long ago for daring to criticize him, saying that no big man should ever criticize another big man who's better than he was?
Well, Shaq does have that whole "one more ring" thing on Kobe.
Had he stayed in LA, what do you figure, two more rings for he and Kobe? Fools for not keeping it together.
Shaq was just dicking around as he always does...LoL @ I got a vesectomy so I can't breed em.
I know most ppl find it terrible...but I love it everytime Imus starts up his racist crap..it's actually funny.
If both Shaq and Kobe were mature enough to think about their futures honestly and self-evaluate well back in 2004? Yeah, at least one more ring wouldn't have been out of the question. But Shaq (as usual) and Kobe (as usual) were too hung up on getting individual attention than just winning. They were just immature. As long as they continued to have that outlook, they wouldn't have won any more and might have ended up killing each other.
That's the advantage Phil Jackson had with the Jordan teams: everybody knew who the Alpha Male was, and he was unselfish enough to include his teammates - but everybody knew 24/7 who ran the show in Chicago, and whose job it was to accept the lesser role. That really wasn't the case with Kobe and Shaq, as Kobe kept improving and Shaq kept showing up increasingly unmotivated and out-of-shape.
i know that everybody waiting for germany-spain final, but i hope russians will spoil it. spain-italy game was boring and almost pain to watch. if you really like soccer you never will wish to see such team winning. spain running out of gas and as long as russian defence will do the job they will win. i believe guus hiddik way better coach that spanish guy and deserve to see his team in final. germany-russia will be perfect game for the final. i can assure everybody it will not end up in penalties. i am very happy that italy is out, i dont know how you can bring such boring soccer to euro cup. yes russia did blow first game and it was good lesson, but now it is defferent team and there are 23 players on the roster and adjustments were made, now it is time to blow europe away.
let's be fair ... the drabness of sunday's affair was italy's doing.
it's one thing to look "exciting" against holland because that's how they play ... guys up front all the time.
as a follower of russia's qualifying group (which croatia was in), i remember them being the most "negative" team there.
(looks up stats.)
yup...their 12 games featured 25 goals total...none too riveting.
perhaps they've changed for the better in that regard, but i'm not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt quite yet ... the one game they played against a defence-first team (greece) this tourney was pretty painful to watch too.
perception ...

" hey bukkake,
please familiarize me with the scoring = excitement equation.
i'm not familiar with it."
