Sunday, June 22nd, 2008 - Dutch To The Ditch

There must be a lot of people losing money on Euro wagering. For the third straight day, the fav went out to the dog and this time, it was Holland losing 3-1 in extra time to Russia. For a team that rested most of their players last game, Holland looked entirely spent while the Russians looked entirely fresh. A stunner, to say the least. Today, Italy aims to be the fourth dog to win, but I'm saying Spain (+155) takes it (Record: 12-15, -$246). I haven't seen them all, but this has to have been the best tournament ever of the big two...JP Ricciardi apologized for his comments about Adam Dunn. Here's hoping Dunn doesn't take his comments back where he called Ricciardi a clown...Toronto FC Manager John Carver would be wise to ditch his policy of keeping the same starting lineup as long as the team wins the game prior. With five players returning from international duty, starting the game yesterday minus Amado Guevara, Jim Brennan and Maurice Edu, among others, could well have cost them a win. Sure, a tie isn't the end of the world, but a win and they're in second place and very much a playoff team. On the plus side, Carver pointedly told CBC post game that "everyone can see" the squad needs a striker...Nick Kypreos, who I generally think is entirely lacking in credibility, says Mats Sundin won't enjoy being boxed in like this with Montreal, and is more likely to go to the New York Rangers. That would give the Big Apple my two fav #13's...things go from bad to worse for the Blue Jays. Shaun Marcum is now on the DL. In other Jays news, former first bag coach Ernie Whitt is not impressed over his dismissal. And seriously, what do you do to get fired as a first base coach? Not take a guys shin pad fast enough? Whitt did a great job laying out JP Ricciardi or as one of the Rando readers glossed him: JP Rittardi. I get that Whitt is sour, but I still haven't forgiven him for Mother's Pizza going under...last nights Ultimate Finale was better than most of the recent UFC pay-per-views, and was free on spike. Diego Sanchez continues to be one of the most exciting fighters anywhere and scored a wild knockout of Luigi Fioravanti, and Amir Sadollah was the Ultimate Fighter 7 champion making quick work of CB Dollaway. Sadollah could be a huge star with his great personality...23 Turks were hurt in celebrations Friday night after their win over Croatia. The cause? "Stray bullets"...have a great Sunday.

I'm one of the assclowns that lost $150 yesterday on Holland. Thought it was a lock...they just got outplayed/outclassed.

While most ppl on RPB want Carver gone, I agree with what he did. That was the same squad that beat Colorado 3-1 last week and they derserved to play. He showed confidence in his guys and that was a great thing to see. With that said, I think it's time he goes back to putting the best possible team out there.

Talks are starting to heat up about a possible BMO field expansion to 30k and of course the Argos talk continue as well

They want him gone? Man, I've not been around enough lately I guess. I think he's done a great job, but this policy has to go.

They talked about the stadium reno on the broadcast yesterday. I think they might be in for a surprise when they go that high and don't sell out weekly. They're in a perfect size right now and have a nice balance between demand and supply.

I also have ZERO desire to see the Argos there and permanent football lines on the field. That just looks like shit.

Well you know how they are, they want half the team gone after a subpar performance.

I'd welcome the reno if it came with fuckin grass. Had the chance to see the mens National Team their last year and it was great to watch. All these WC qualifying games will more than likely happen at Saputo with the exception of one or two.

I'm pretty sure if Argos came through there would certainly be no permanent lines on the field.

Quick question..when you bet online for EUROs...does the result include extra time....so considering how you took Spain today, does that include if they win by pk or just the 90.

You can bet either way - 90 minutes or just to advance. Obviously, nicer lines on the former.

I don't think there is a hope in hell of grass if the Argos move there - the wear and tear of the added events, not to mention it being football, would just mangle that field.

yf,
it's 90 mins (and injury time) only. there is the option of betting "team to advance" which includes ET and PK.

Wow lines are terrible for win/draw

Spain or Draw = -275
Draw or Italy = -200
Spain or Italy = -300

Yea I agree there would be no grass but I'd pick up seasons with a reno...not sure what the figures would look like but I don't think it would sell out...25k maybe.

The one upside is it would likely keep ticket prices down with more available.

It seems all 3 of these upsets saw the favorite rest players for their 3rd game. You guys knowing footie better, think it makes a difference?

and I don't think Carver could have expected the 3 returness to go full 90 with Brennan playing Friday and I believe Edu as well.

and Ernie Whitt was responsible for Mother's going under?

Holland came out flat, Croatia had plenty of oppurtunities, Germany was the better team.

If Holland plays a key player in a meaningless game and he gets injured...the manager looks like an idiot.

Don't think the rest had much do to with the games thus far though I will say these upsets are annoying from a gaming standpoint.

Finally a win, redeeming yourself.

By far the best tournament I can remember as well. Exciting play, last minute ties going to penalties, some controversial refereeing, but mostly very good. But more important, there's been a lot of fair play and very little controversial dives and foul play.

Spain breaking their curse? no win against Italy in tournament play in 88 years and been knocked out on the 22nd of June 3 times earlier (all on penalties) before today.
