Friday, May 30th, 2008 - Monsieur Mustache
Guess who finished third in most annoying MLB mascots according to Maxim?...the Seattle/Oklahoma City Sonics have six - 6! - second round NBA picks in the coming draft…speaking of Seattle, Seattle Sounders FC, the expansion franchise in the MLS kicking off next year, are planning on bringing in a marching band college style. Not sure how I feel about that……C.C. Sabathia for Bobby Abreu? Could happen, if you believe Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal. As a Yankee fan, I'm begging for that to be done…Sammy Sosa says he's going to retire after the World Baseball Classic next spring. I'm not sure anyone, the Dominican included, cares...if you win an award called the Mark Messier Leadership Award, hand selected by Mark Messier himself, you're a great leader by definition. So to the clowns/idiots/mental midgets who have questioned Mats Sundin over the years, stop talking. Losers...Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun lists Montreal and Detroit as two teams ready, willing and able to land Mats Sundin this offseason...how is diving any more an embarrassment to the game of hockey than repeatedly taking cheap shots at a guys head who is coming back from a concussion like the Pens have done - that paragon of all that is "right" in hockey Gary Roberts leading the way - with Johan Franzen of the Red Wings?...tomorrow, RandoMango brings what should be an interesting Derek Jeter discussion your way. Some of my Yankee fan brethren may disown me...another day, another Raptors rumor. TJ Ford to the Knicks for pick #6...for all of you that like to have some suds on the golf course, I present to you, the "Uro Club"...good thing for Kobe Bryant and the Lakers that his trade requests of last summer never were fulfilled, no?...Jason Giambi is on fire since he started growing a mustache, and he plans to keep it...have a fantastic Friday.

Ford for #6...no thanks.
Marching band? I'm with you...not sure how I feel about it.
Hope you enjoyed it guys...Jays won by 12...won't see a winning margin like that in this season again.
No way that trade could be only Ford for a draft pick. Since the Knicks are over the cap (and we're talking WAY over, this being the Knicks, and all) the salaries have to match up to 125% coming back. So somehow the Raptors have to take back somewhere around $6.4 million of salary as well as the sixth pick.
There would have to be a third team involved (that's under the cap, which limits that to Memphis, Minnesota and Philadelphia IIRC) somewhere for that to work.
Add Golden State and Seattle to that list, btw (just barely, in both cases). That would likely also generate a trade exception coming back to Toronto in that move, which they could use later, technically, to make up salary to match in a trade, or to trade just by itself.
Lastly, just to be clear, the Raptors would have to absorb somewhere between $6.4 - $10.1 million of salary coming back if this is a straight trade (Ford for draft pick + matching salary). If they use a third team, the Knicks could send something to that third party (like up to $3 million cash, or a second round pick, or one of their jabronis, or whatever), and send us the first round pick.
Is that advantageous for the Raptors? Maybe. We get out from under Ford's $24 million remaining contract, Hose B loses all his excuses and can no longer get away with "not contributing anything if he doesn't make any mistakes" (his modus operandi) - but really, is whoever's going to be left at 6th going to be a solid enough player to give Jose and Bosh the help they'll need if we no longer have Ford? Dubious. Salary cap-wise, it's nice: assuming we find a backup point guard in the range of $1.5 million/year or something, and Calderon gets inked for $6 or $6.5 million, then we're good. We'd be paying that 6th pick Delfino-type money, except hopefully get a better player. We'd be better positioned to be a player in free agency next year, if so.
I'm starting to get the feeling B.K. is no fan of moving Ford for the #6.
I don't know that I'm 100% against it, it solves one problem (salary cap issues with having platoon point guards), gives us a pleasant surprise as a solution (trade exemption, which can be used to match salaries in a trade for a few months) and allows us to get what should be a solid young wing prospect. The downside is that we're still left with a problem at the SG going forward (Parker's getting old and slow) and I doubt a rookie's going to give us the perimeter defense we need (given that the next time Hose B plays effective perimeter D will be his first). If we find a decent younger SG in that time and Bargnani can learn to ignore Smitch as effectively as Smitch has learned to ignore him (and consequently develop into a really good center), then we're not looking too bad actually.
I think that's going to look better in the future than it would for the next 2 years, personally - by then we should be able to find a better replacement for Hose B.
Interesting piece of news:
31% of NHL ticket revenue from Canadian teams
An NHL report shows the six Canadian teams account for 31 per cent of the $1.1 billion US in league ticket revenue, the Toronto Star reported Thursday.
Overall, the league has seen its ticket revenue rise almost 10 per cent, but 11 of the 24 U.S.-based clubs were either revenue-flat or lost ticket income.
The Toronto Maple Leafs nudged out the Montreal Canadiens to lead the league this past season with $1.9 million worth of ticket revenue per game.

Considering how much bigger Bell Centre is than the ACC, that's pretty sad what Leafs fans are paying to see that shit squad.
That's just another good indication as to how stupid most Toronto sport fans are.
